Re: Endorsement of Gus Hall's Political Thinking By The Presidium of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union When Timofeev returned to the Soviet Union after accompanying Khrushchev to the United States in September, 1960, where the latter had attended the United Nations General Assembly, Timofeev was instructed to prepare a report reflecting conversations he had had with CPUSA functionaries Gus Hall, Morris Childs, Jacob Stachel, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and James Jackson, all members of the CPUSA National Committee, regarding the internal situation in the CPUSA, and the dis- ruptive influence William Z. Foster, Chairman Emeritus of the CPUSA, had on the American Party, Timofeev's report included information regarding [matters in controversy within the CPUSA ten years ago. His veport also reflected the roleof Eugene Dennis in opposing the political line of William Z. Foster, The report also reflected what the political thinking of Gus Hall had been and would be, Timofeev did not submit this report "through channels", but submitted it directly to Anastas Mikoyan. Three weeks after submitting the report to Mikoyan, Timofeev went to the latter and inquired whether the report had been discussed in the Presidium and if so, what the Presidium's reaction had been to the report. Timofeev made this inquiry despite the fact that he was well aware that discussions in the Presidium are secret. Mikoyan, referring to this policy of the Presidium, said that ordinarily he would not talk about discussions held in the Predidium, but in view of Timofeey being the son of Eugene Dennis, he would tell the latter the following: ~2- west
