.' . . .. I ! .. t ? . .. .'. 1 . . - . * *. I * trip to Washingtan. Ambassador Bunker v a n among the group of dig- nitaries seeing Ky off at the Saigon Airport. Extensive press coverage . has been noted in the past two weeks about the Ky visit. St was for a tfme regarded highly doubtful that Ky would make an appearance at the Mchtire rally. At this time it seems that South Vietnam's Vice Presi- dent is determined to do so. This development in America.'s pro-war community has prompted antiwar forces to schedule counterdemonstrations in Washington OB the same date. In a recent article in W a s h i n g t ~ n ~ s underground Quicksilver Times (15-25 September 1970), a spokesman for the Youth International Party (Yippie) stater that if Ky shows up he will be met by 100,000 "stoned freaks. '' The Yippies plan on 3 October to distribute 5,000 Vietnamese flags so that Ky can be exposed to t h c d w h c ~ s i d e with the North. * Less bizarre but possibly more ominous is another counterdem- onstration planned for Ky's visit on the 3rd. Davi8, the radical 1eftist.spokesman for the New Mobe, was at George Washington University (GWU) stirring up support for a somewhat more civilized but potentially violent and confrontational antiwar demonstration. - In attendance at the meeting at GWU were students from GWU, American University, Georgetown University and the. Uniyersity of Maryland. Press reports reflect that the plan supported by Davis was vague in nature and resulted in confused debate among paktieipanks. At ihi? GWU meeting the Student Mobe at GWU proposed a massive peaceful non- confrontational demonstration, but the group opted for more militancy as proposed bg Davis. Davis told the students "we must declare Ky a war criminal and demand his arrest. We will march toBether to the war rally at Washington Memorial, surround Ky, and then a r r e s t him a s a war criminal. 'I (Yippie spokesmen have also threatened to a r r e s t Ky. ) On 21 September Rennie The fact that Davis of the New Mobe as well as representative8 from the Student Mobe participated at the GWU gathering is of some si&ificancs in and of itself. .These two groups which represent basic differences in American communism have been feuding since last fall and only in recent we.eks have been showing several signs of reconcil- iation, at least temporarily. . . Since the prcscnt plans by pro- and antiwar factions at thc same place*on the aame date constitute serious and profound differences of approach to b e r i c a n foreign policy, specifically with regard to our Southeast Asian involvament, all elements'of a serious and, potentially bloody confrontation'are present. Not only are most elements . 0 . .
