at the instigaticn of the veterans enrolling at the University after World War I,
who were very internaticnally-minded as a result of their war experience, Under
this Program, the Associated Students of Stanford University have invited betwean
seven and ten outstanding students from abroad to Stanford each year. Approx:
imately ons third of these Foreign Scholars have bean women. Since ita inception,

The Program and its Purpose
The Program is a cooperative effert of the student goverment, the indepen- "
dent campus living groups, and the University. Each participating group provides :
some *f the support necessary to make complete scholarships available to the
foreign students involved, The awards provide travel expenses within the United
States, reom and beard for one academic year (nine months), complete tuition,
and vacation, bcok, and monthly allowances. In addities to their studies, the
‘Scholars are expected to pursue a varied program of extra-curricular activities
dasigned to broaden their knowledge of the people and customs of this nation.
The purpese of the Program as established by the stadent legislature is.
"to further world understanding by promoting the exchange of idsas among college
students with consequont stimulation ef the Stanford Student Bedy." The Program
is not designed primarily te previde an academic opportunity. In fact study”
‘only for a degree ig discouraged. Unlile the National, Student Association
Foreign Student leadership Project, the Program does not aim primarily to train
‘student leaders. It is directed mainly toward the stimilation of the Stanford
student body, in tha balief that an intimate exchange of ideas among students of
Stanford and these from universities abroad is one good way te further world
understanding. Since the Program emphasizes the bem{fit which American students
are expected to derive from the presence of the Foreign Scholars on campus, the
most important damands on a Scholar's time, aside from academic responsibilities,
coms from living groups and other student organizations and activities. Con-
sequently, the eonse of exploiting the Scholars mst ba faced, but the Scholars ©
and thé Commiftss can cooperate in finding a balance between obligations toward
the living greups, the Program, and individual academic goals. A careful dis-
cussion at the begiming of the Scholar's stay usually clarifies this problen..
4 The Setting: the Campus ani the Organization
The undergraduate student body at Stanford numbers about 5,000. There
are owr 2,COO graduate: students, but most of the significant contact betreen
Foreign Scholars and American students involves the undergraduate population.
Among the undergraduates, the ratio of men to women is about 24 to 1, and this
Tatio is observed in the selection of Scholars. A majority of the under-
graduates live on campug in university dormteries or fraternities, while a few
off-campus stadsnte liws in private homes. (nly the fraternities, housing ;
approximately 1,000 undergraduates, manage their ow finances as livin groups. t
The other tormitories have .clubs vhich carry on sceial functions other - 4
activities, but roem and board are finanesd by the University. The lenis i
Eating Clubs are an exception. They finance their cm board, vot mmbers live
