ed THE EXPERIENCE OF THE SCHOLAR
A for the Award :
The Foreign Scholar's exeriencs with the Program begins when he reads ons
of the announcemsants sent to over four hundred universities, educational founda-
tions, student travel agencies and newspapers abroad. These announcements
direct him to write to tho Foreign Scholarship Committee for application blanks. |
The Scholar receives ao blank fren the Comittee unless he is obviously ineligible.
He returns tho application to tha Comnittes with the exception of two personal
recommendation sheets which he givws to two of his professers. Those ara mailed
directly to the Committee by the professors, The Scholar thea waits until all
the applications have beon processed at Stanford. If the applicant was succass- |
ful, he receives a cable notifying him of the award and requesting a cabled reply.
After the Scholar accepts, official relationships begin.’
The Scholar receives the necessary letters from university authorities
enabling him to secure an Exchanges Visitor's visa. This typs of visa authorizes
the University to enfores his return to his country. He also is sent a copy of
the Stanferd in which his picture appears along With those of other Scholars
in a feature story. He recoives the pertinant miversity catalogues and other -
correspondence frou tha Committee doscribing wiversity life. He learns where he
will live at Stanford, and is sent a brief description of his first living grou. .
The Scholar also receives a letter from the president of the living grou where |
he will reside during Autumr Quarter. But most of his correspondance with the
Committee ig concerned with his travel arrangements and visa application. .
Travel nts
If his travel within the United States is arranged by the Comittee, the
Seholar is sent explicit instructions as to what procedure to follow upon his
arrival. In New York, ho is mot by a membar of tho Committee on Friendly
Relations Among Foreign Studenta, which holds messages and bank drafts for
_. Scholars, sees that thay-are mat when they arrive, and takes them to hotels for
their first night. Often tho Scholar is mt by a Stanford studont or students
who arranged accommodations far him in a private heme before his arrival.
Pre-Registration Orientation on Campus
Although overy effort is made to eacure a uniform arrival date, tho Scholar
may arrive on campus any tims from three to fifteen days befors registration for
Autumn Quarter. But his traval is planned so that in any case ho will arrive in
tims for a threceday orientation period. If the Scholar arrives before the
livirig group can accommodate him, the Foreign Scholarship Ceumittss, through the
Community Committee for ‘International Students, sees that ho is placed in a ‘
private hows until tho! ‘doemditory is open or until the fraternity has a room for
him. : The expense of eaintonanes in the privats home is met by the Committee, as
are the Scholar's meal | jeosts during the preregistration period.
‘Tt a Scholar has ‘qerived particularly early, the uso of his tims until the
