| Sha ALLEW GLE WII —_——_—_—— ee OO ne nn nnn C00819160, Ga Friday, March let, I visited Stenford University to discuse certain aspects of the Toretga Student Leadership Project with s member of the Advisory Board, Mr. sorner Yarpbrunn. Mr. Varebrunn and I discussed for some length cf tine the poseitilitier for a forei@ student leader at the University of Califcrnia. Althcugh he 41¢ not feel corretent to comzent in great detail with respect to the student activities progren, Xr. “arabrunn shared sone cf ny reeervations especially with respect to FSF. Hovever, Mr. Warnbrunn felt that dt vould ve very useful to have cne of. the foret@n etu“ent leatere on the est coast, and promised that if the yroblen at the University cf California proved ir the final analysis to de that of getting sufficient euppert fres the adairietratioa, he felt that he would in all probability te able to make certain intesvections for us with the admissions office or the Deen cf Stuents in order to ensure a certrin arount of sdninistrative cooperation. Althengh Stenfcri University was not veing considered for the Foreig Stuzent Leador= ebip Project, J tcck ths cpportanity of uy vieit to discuss teth with Mr. ¢arzbruan and with certain stcvient leaders the pessibilities of the Project either this year or next year, sti elec discussed soze aspects of the etudent activities, particularly NSa cn canpus. Tao Jer defore I orrived at Stanford, NSA hed been defeated in ea caxpus-wide referendun. In @teowelcnt vit’ certain studext leaders dneluding the President cf the Studext Council, ant ifs. Further tiscuesiozs leat re to cenclude that the reneral ettitude ef the students : at-Sterfcrd University — es certain cCesplacency and perhspe even cynicism with respect to : "do gocd® orgenizaticns on carpus 4e not entirely conducive tu work such es RSA in general or the Foreign Student Leadership Project in particuler. It apreerr that one cf the freatee? lacks is the absence of instructive far-sighted leadership. . Inasmuch a8 80 wach of cacpus politice tends to revolve around perecnalities, it ie unfortunate indeed that the last } i elected President wes cae cf & eroup whc rer on a Platform roughly resembling the slatfora , | devieed ty New Yorx's “ast side kids, ‘This is pot as faceticun 2s it ecuncs ines=zach a8 i é one of the hallzarks of the candidate and his supporters were the Marlon Brando type black : leather jackets and caps and dark shirts, etc. ; ' i ot . t i The fact thrt thin facticn won the last student body president elections :rovides the i key to the understanting of why RSA is not entirely popula? at Stanford. On the other hand, I attended a discussion 4n the Internaticnal activities Comission of the student government: of the poseidi) ity of constructing a kind of retreas house cx the cutekirte of the campus which could be used by various campus groups for discuesion cf j student problems and for having neetings dn a relatively secluded area. Both the quality of the discussion and the quality of the participants ‘n the discuseica vere in decided contrast to the impression likely to de conveyed ty an cbservaticn of the entice which take place during a studex$ eccernaent electica. Paradoxically enough, one of 9 zost elective participants in the :discuseion was the newly-eiected President of the Stadont Council whe ran cn the platform which 2 have descrived above.
