have been initiated and maintained by this group are in my view extreordinarily ovfes-
tive. The srogressive group on cancua is, however, very much concerned less the pro-
greac wrich they have sade over the past few years is now to be threatened by new ,
conservative tendencies vithin the administration. ‘There is a great deal of soul
searching going on &t Allegheny emong the younger and older professors, adnin’stre-
tive personzel, and even azong the students. There is a great deal of self-appraircal
and of self-criticiss. One really gets the sense of a social group in fernent. My
own view is that those tendencies vhich have been set in inotinn during the past five
yeara: the relatively high degree of confidence and cooperation between students and
faculty, the comprehensive progran of student-run and student-naintained activity, and
the nov: toward more dynamic and more democretic central atudent organizations = &r¢
Bll tencencies which are probably with the College to stay.

The International Activities Program, Up until very recently, the interest in
international affairs or the international awareness of students at Allegheny Collcce
was a-porently very small. Part of the new spirit which has been deseribed above
has been 2 revitalised foreign students program. The work of integreting foreign
students vithin the Allegheny community has been primarily the resxonsibjlity of a
Foreign Students Committee. ‘This Committes is headed by a Kise Leaveret; and on the
Committee servs Dean McCracken, Mr. Lindley, and one Dr. Mardock.’ I was very much
impressed during the meeting of the Foreign Students Comittee with the very decp
awareness that the stadentea and the faculty menbers seemed to have for the needs of
the foreign students and for the responsibility of the college community in helping
thee to adjust. Although there are no special facilities for foreign students, the
approach of the Committee seexs to be to try to integrate the foreign students within
the total commnity life without any special institutions cr any svecial facilities. ,
On the whole, this program has not been as succescful as it might de, and this is
recognised by the Committee. It seems ac though the conservative tinge of the canyus
bas hong on, particularly with respect to human relations probitems. The Comunittes has
worked very hard, for exemple to try %o arrange dates for foreign students with
Allegheny students. This 1s only civen to illustrate their concern with the total
life and acjustment of the foreign students on the Allegheny campus. It should also
De mentioned that this Committee includes six very effective students.
