Due to the nature of the September 15th bombing, the FBI began =.
an immediate investigation and advised the Department of the
action being taken. Although the FBI does not actively investigate
all bombing cases, it does cooperate in every way possible with
state and local authorities. The full facilities of the FBI
Laboratory and Identification Division are available to render
any assistance. | — oe
In spite of these facts, we are accused of both |
exceeding and shirking our duties. Some of these charges stem
trom a lack of understanding, but many of them come from persons
who bave @ personal interest and distort the truth to suit their
own purposes.
The FBI has achieved a number of accomplishments
in the civil rights field, Our investigations bave enabled the
Department of Justice to file more than forty suits in five states
to end racial discrimination in voting. FBI Agents solved the
case involving the burning of a Greyhound bus transporting -
"Freedom Riders" through Ajlabama in 1961. Six persons have
been convicted for their part in this crime. An FBI investigation
in September, 1962, led to the arrest and conviction in state
court of four persons for burning a Negro church in Terrell
County, Georgia. Byron De Le Beckwith, the man charged with
the murder of Medgar Evers, was also arrested by FBI Agents.
