UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION In Reply, Please Refer to B irmitigham , Alabama File No, April 29, 1975 RE: UNKNOWN SUBJECTS; BOMBING OF SIXTEENTH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH, BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, SEPTEMBER 15, 1963. BOMBING MATTERS For the information of the Department of Justice, Attorney General WILLIAM J. BAXLEY, State of Alabama, Montgomery, Alabama, at his request, was contacted on April 21, 1975, by the Special Agent in Charge, F.B.1I., Birminghan, Alabama, at which time Mr. BAXLEY advised that his office had information from an informant which he felt justified additional inquiry in captioned matter. Mr. BAXLEY declined to identify the informant and indicated he desired that the results of certain investigation conducted by the F.B.1I. during its exhaustive investigation in this matter be made available to his investigators for use in pursuing his informant's information. He also indicated that Agents of the F.B.I. could participate in joint investigation with his investigators, but, whether or not F.B.I. Agents did participate, it was his intention that investigation would be conducted as a result of information from this informant. It should be noted that during April, 1971, Mr. BAXLEY contacted the FBI, Birmingham, shortly after he was elected to the office of Attorney General for the State of Alabama, at which time he indicated that one of the great aims during his term as Alabama Attorney General would be to z J * . . solve captioned matter. At that time he indicated that his investigators had been in contact with a source and that this source could possibly provide information concerning captioned matter. Mr. BAXLEY would not identify this source or the nature of the information that the source could possibly provide.
