The Five Percenters are followers of & man name Clarence (Puddin’) Smith, who calls himself “Allah.” They are said to believe he is God. He has beer: in jail since he was errested in s disturbance in egriy June, but the members insist that he stil! is God and that, as his followers, they cannot be killed. . The report said that when a 15-year-old student and member of the Five Percent- ers was killed as he and other members fought with an edult on a playground in &t. Nicholas Homes, his friends shouted: “Get up. You're not dead. We can't die.” The bor was dead, how- ever, and his friends gave his Muslim name to a recruit in erder to continue his life, the report stated. Board of Education sources indicated the report was be- ing withheld because of some of the statements of opinion in it. The reference may have been to an impassioned para- graph which termed the Five Percenter philosophy “disbol- ical,” said it was aimed at the destruction of every “desir- able institution” of Harlem, and accused the group of combining brainwashing and terror. The report said that after the youth was killed other Five Percenters threatened ° violence to non-members. Severa) “pork-eaters” brought weapons from their homes to defend themselves on the way to schoo}. They checked their Weapons with the principal when they arrived. The report added that the Five Percenters undoubtedly have adult leaders and that there is evidence the group receives funds and advise “from outside the United States.” The report said that the. incidents came to an end after the first two weeks of } schoo] and that 14 arrests had been made. Teachers at choo! agreed that the disorders nad ceased, but said the attitudes which caused them are still apparent in the Five Per- center students. They believe the end of the disorders was brought about br five-day suspensions issued to students who tin- sisted on being called by Muslim names, the arrests and the stationing of a po- Nceman st the school to patrol the halis. A board spokesman sald there have been 12 to 15 ar- Tests at the school this year, not all of them Five Percent- ers, ter. five-day suspensions and two ful] suspensions. Some teachers believe there may be further disorders pending. “We may be in the eye of the storm,” one of them said. Some police sources say they believe the group has become quiet in recent weeks because most of its leaders have been arrested on one charge or another, but they say the group still exists and thax believe that new leaders are moving in*ermie= .
