By 1927, ZWILLMAN had begun to operate "wildcat"
breweries. It was at this time that MAX HASSEL and MAA
GRt.NBLHG, operator of the Peter nock Brewery in harrison,
New Jersey, and a second brewery in Llizabeth, New Jersey,
were killed, The murders took place on April 12, 1933 and
have never been solved,
On November 15, 1932, the poll boxes of the First,
Third, Fourth, ana Fifth werds of tne City of Newark were
stolen from the Uftice of the Commissioner of Registretion.
Ballots frou the boxes of the First, Third, and Sixth Wards,
Gity of Newark, were stolen from the City Clerk, A conii-
dential informént, wnose information is believed to be
reliable, steted tnat preceding tne theft, WILLIAM EGAN,
City Commissioner and Director of Fublic Safety; CoARLES
Global, anotner Newark City Comnissioner; Pe.TtR J. O'TTCOLL,
City Clerk; and ABNiR Z2wILimAN met at the Riviera Hotel and
planned this tuoeft,. dwiLlmah was reported to nave furnisned
the men for the job.
In blizabetn, New Jersey, @ brewery known as tne
Rising Sun Brewery operatea curing tne prohidition era and was
reportedly controlled by 4wILiwAN and one NICK DbiLmMoURb,
woile tnis brewery was in operation, (a) Prohibition agent
(named) JOHN G. FINNELLI was killed at tne brewery. NICK >
LELMORB was tried ana acquitted of tnis murder and the
indictment against WILLIAm Whiswarn in connection with the
murder was noleprossed. this murder hes never been solved.
2vILLMAN @nd nis group continued in the illicit
liquor business and to some extent in gambling activities
until the repeal of the kighteenth Amendment. Immediately
after this law was repealed, he supposediy purchased a
brewery under the nane of United Brewery Company located on
Springfield Avenue, Newark, New Jersey. The operation of
this brewery was finally discontinued for lack of business.
Subsequently, Z2wiLlwAN was identified witn a business known
as the Harr-Kegtap Company. Litigation begun by the Cooler
Keg System against the Harr-khegtap Company in Federal Court,
Newark, New Jersey, resulted in a decision rendered against
ZWILLMAN after ZWILLMAN'S failure to eppeer in court. He
was forced to close this business,
