Tllegal Liguor o c | On February 6 and 7, 1958, 3A seme, cal reviewed the official transcript in the case Be ° JAMES RUTKIN held in the United States District Court, Newark, Mew Jersey, during October, 1950. This case was based on an allegation that RUTKIN had not paid federal income tax on a specific sum of money received from the dissolution of an alleged bootlegging operation in the early 1930s. In thie case the transcript reflects that JOSEPH REINFELD, who admitted being part of the bootlegging operation in question, testified that in 1930 "LONGIE" Z¥WILLMAN and "DOC" STACHER and several others joined the then functioning bootlegging . operation. REIRFELD testified that this group added capital to the operation and in turn received 50 per cent of the profits. REINFELD and others testified that this bootlegging operation was liguidated in 1933, and that several of the interested parties including ZWILLMAN and STACHER formed the Browne Vintners Company, which in 1940 was sold to Distillers Seagrams, Lt., for seven and one half million dollars. Witnesses during this trial aoted that ZWILLMAN and STACHER did not become owners on record of any of the stock of Browne Vintners Company but that three SILVERMAN brothers, MOE, PHILLIP and DAVID, among others, were “fronts” for ZWILLMAN and STACHER and were shareholders of record, althanesh nat particip ating in tha diatribution af the profits Se werw ep seer S aw oe, pati en Fay = Sn eee Se ——- geese = of the company upon dissolution. aN "26 oe eee pe re ee me me eg re rege a te”
