CHICAGO, Feb. 16 (NB), ‘y
Threata against the life of Mrs. tendy......,
Jack McGurn, widow of the Ca . Freceeesecee
pone gangster who wasslain early.
Saturday morning, were reported » ee
to police today. . ,
Steps to protect her were im- ,
mediately taken, particularly be ~
cause authorities are eager to ob
tain the secreta she is supposed -
to possess which they feared
would be sealed with her death.
WIDOW GOES IN HIDING
Mrs. McGurr’ was in hiding t
day with her 12-year-old daugh
ter by an earlier marriage, while
i preparations were being com-
S| j pleted for McGurn's funeral.
é Meanwhile detectives, seeking
through a record of McGurn’s re
cent movements a clue to his fate,
came upon a curious underworld
story concerning a meeting of
racketeers in Miami, Fla., where
McGurn is reported to have.
pleaded—literally—for his life,
The answer was: Thumbs down.
Police learned McGum went to
Miami primarily to see Frank
Nitti, formerly known as “the en:
forcer” of the laws which Scar-
face Al Capone laid down for his
followers.
PROTECTION REFUSED
Instead of seeing Nitt! alon-,
however, the story is that McGurn
t was brought before a “committee”
; which gave him a chilly recep
tion—not definitely ordering his
} death but declining to protect his
; life.
Among the members of the
“committee,” it was sald, were
Jake Guzik, former big shot, just -
out of prison; Ralph Capone, .
brother of Al; Willie Heeney,
“utility man” in the Capone or
| ganization, and Charles “Lucky”
Luciano, ruler of the “U. 5.°—
which means “Unione Siclliani.”
The business before the conr
mittee, police said, was the for-
mation in Chicago ‘of a branch of
the big loan shark racket which
already had proved highly profit-
able in New York—profitable be-
cause @ man with a gun makes a
highly efficient soeliestos, a
splendid insurance policy against
