An examination of these files reflected a telegram from J. Baskin, General Secretary, Workmen's Circle, 175 East- Broadway, New York City, to the Secretary of Etate dated December 19, 1941, quoting a cablegram sent to the Soviet Government through Maxim Litvinov regarding the Alter-Ehrlich case. This letter (SIC) stated that Alter and Ehrlich during their prior visits to the United €tates were active in behalf of the Workmen's Circle. The above-mentioned cablegram stated that the organization was elated several months before to leern that Alter end Ehriich were among the number of arrested €ocialists from Poland, who were liberated “in Russia. Then the organization just learned from the American press that Alter and Ehrlich were again arrested.
