tive Committee" dated July 7, 1946, which was a report of six
months of Nationel Committee on Atomic Information ¢ctivity,
written by Daniel Melcher, Director.
Under the heading "Finances this report stated that
as of Juns 30, the NCAI had check book balance totaling $69,256.94;
further that only five weeks earlier the NCAT had teen several
thousand %cllars in the red, but the staff though unpaid for two
pay periods, showed extraordinary confidence that things would
work out, and kept on the job.
The renort stated further that the NCAT had Irefess
Einstein and his cohorts to thank for the success of thre fund
raising drive; further that he had early exnressed interest dy,
the work «nd hed accepted membership on the Scientific Consul-
tant's Pan 1: that when Fr. Einstein was approached by Hr. Crean
and Meleher in May for further backing he didn't even wait to
hear what *thev vanted. He said:
“Don't explein to me. I know what it is. Yeu need
money. You should get it, too. JT have read all your material
an@ I @gon'tt think there is any other cause more importrnt.
What help vou want I will gladly give."
Under the heading "Activities to Date" this report

mn June 3, 1946, the HC’T issued a newsletter esking
for greater support. Included in this letter was a cory cf a
telegram signed by Einstein on M:y 23, 1946, to several hendred
prominent Americans asking ther to give financial suppert to
Seientifiec grours who were endeavoring to edueate the citizens
of this cowitry to the significance of Atomic Energy. (Source

larly regarding publications. The informant stated lfelcher made
a secret visit to Dr. Albert Einstein accusing members of the ICAI
of "red-baitine’. He also prevailed on Mrs. Edward Hugh Ccndon,
wife of the Director of the Bureau of Standards to write e letter
to Dr. Binstein, following the same theory.
