Ineluded ir this material was an article captioned "Armies and Oceans Cffer Tittle Sceurity in Atomie Ages--Fobert.". a pi eee Aa This article stated in part that Dr. Altert Binstein, cne of the great scientists of cur agr tells us in effect that 9 state of emergency exists; further that in a recent message he said "a new type of thinking is essertial if mankind is to survive and mave to higher levels" Wats. wht oe article stated further that Dr. Einstein had agreed “to hioad up the "Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists" to rvise a fund of 200,090 to sponsor a great national campaign for publie educnticn on the violent issues cf atomic enerer. This article stated further that Dr. Einstein explained why he and the other scientists had acted to raise a Isrge funi to meet the 'rresent crisis;" further that he said "as sctentists who work in the interests of our country at a time of nations! peril, and who rresidea zt the birth of the atomic age, we hase this evervhelming responsibility fo mankind. As citizens, we saw chat the people were wholly unaware of the supreme impli- cations of this new nour, mainly because of the necessities of military security. We are not men of setion,.tre consideration of these fsetorse forced us out of Inacticn," Under the sub-heading "Speak Pravely, S-ys Einstein’ this artic!s stated further that Dr. Einstein had snecifiecally appealed for fingneial aid; further that meney ecculid be sent directly ‘o Dr. Albert Einstein, Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, pipineston, New Jersey. Further that gifts rangine from #2 to £10,000 had been sent in to Dr. Binstcin; together with Dr, Einstein on the Emergency Ccmmittee for leading Seientists of the Atomic Energy Field was Dr. Hens Retie, Dr. Edward Cordon, Pr. Leo Szilard and Dr. Hereld Urey. This article stated further that Dr. Einstein wrote “Seience has broucht forth this danrer but the real pretlem is infthe minds snd hearts of men. We will not change the hearte off other men by mechanisms, but by changing our hearts and staking bravely.
