The Daily Worker of February 1, 1950, carried an article
entitled "Einstein, Mann Blast Threat to Lawyers". This article
stated in part that Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Professor Thoras
Emerson and thirteen other distinguished Americens on the previous
day denounced the trend towerd disciplinary action against lawyers
wio defend "political minorities, racial minorities, and labor er gani=
zations."
The article stated further that such acticns right destrey
the right to a fair trial and adequate legal counsel 4& guaranteed by
the Sixth Amendment to the American Constitution; further that the
statement mentioned the contenpt sentences by Judge Medina against
the five lawyers, ccunsei for the eleven Comminist icaders, who were
sentenced to from one tc six months in jail.
