He hAs a reserva- tion at the Fairmont Hotel. This information is also known to the warden at Alcatraz who has been told that Pearson has exhibited a tendency in the past to pay too much attention to what convicts tell him. Nevertheless, he is to be afforded the same treatment as any other newspaper reporter. Price said the intensive investigation is continuing but as yet no evidence has been developed to indicate that subjects successfullymade their way to the mainland. Likewise, however, there is no information to show that they did not. The paddle, obviously made at Alcatraz, was found between 100 and 200 yards off the shoreline at Angel Island which is in the Bay. The water there is about 12 feet deep. This is the only evidence which might support the conclusion the convicts reached Angel Island but this isno way conclusive. SAC Price stated the work which the subjects performedin - ( preparation for the escape is fantastic. Examination of the Mae West life preserver jacket which was left behind shews great ingenuity in its prepara- tion. Using raincoats as materia}, the subjects not ory sewedthe seams 2 but apparently used hot steam pipes to vulcanize these seams to make them air tight. They used a hollow plastic tube, such as is ordinarily contained in small spray devices in bottles, as a means of inflating the jacket.
