Formerly Workers
The Mey 4, 1942, issus of “Labor Action,” then ean o1ficial
publication of the Workers Party (WF), carried an articie which
reflected that the WP was formed in April, 1940, as a result of a
Split within the lezdersbip of the Sccialist Workers Farty (SWP).
The article stated that when the Hitler-Stalin Fact was Signed and
Poland invaded, the minority group within tke SWPP, in preslaiming
the formation of the ¥P, condemned the pact as being imperialistic
in nature and stated it would not support either itperialist carp.
The April 25, 1949, issue cf "“Labcr écticn' contained an
mecount of the Fifth National Convention of the &F, helo March
24-27, 1949, in New Yerk City, which refiected the change ci name
of the organizaticn from the WP to the Independent Secizlist League
(ISL) in order to emphasize the character cf the grceup BS a4 propa-
ganda group fer the spreading of socialist ideas and nct as a
full-fledged political party.
Tke July 14, 1958, issue of "Labor Action," an official
publication of the ISL, contained an article captioned "The I5L
Program in Brief.” The article indicated: "The ISL etands for
eccjialist democracy and against the two systems of exploitation
which now divide the world: capitalism and Stalinism. The ISL,
as @ Marxist movement, looks to the working class and its ever-
present struggle as the basic progressive force in society. The
ISL is organized to spreac the ideas of socialism in the iabor
movement and among all other sections of the people. There can
be no lasting and genuine democracy without socialism and there
can be no socialism without democracy."
The September 22, 1958, issue of “Laber Action" con-
tained an undated statement signed by the Political Committee of
the ISL which indicated that the ISL had been dissclived. The
etaternent urged ferrer ISL members to join the Socialist Party-
Social Democratic Federation (SP-SDF).
A source advised on October 30, 1958, that the Chicago
Branch of the ISL, which was ans affiliate of the rational
organization, was cisselved in September, 1958, and all active
members joined the SP-SDF on October 9, 1958.
The S¥P has been designated pursuant to Executive
Order 10450.
