Dear Friends:
Increasing racial tension of the past few months in our
own fand has been disturbing the consctences of the nanon,
Time and 2vain we wonder and ask. “What can Pde”
The APSC has found varied channels of expression for
our concern that equality of oppertumty may become real
for school children, home-scekers or job hunters. En these
ways each of sou has a role, since all of us— stall, comimitice
members and contributors — catlectvely canstitite the
APSC.
The Sate summer crisis after the first Negro fanuly bought
ahome in Levittown, Pennsylvania, bay required almost con-
stant atteption and assistunece of a stall member, ABSC guid:
ance helped stabilize the situaben in that community and
brought recognition for “positive and forthright leadership”
from Richard Nissen. Phe comment was included in a beter
from the Vice President acknowledging the Commitice’s
recent appeal to President Eisenhower to speak out clearly
on the racial situation.
More than a yeat af work in dhe Nosth Caroling schoui
program came lo achmactic point with the peacelul encoil-
mentof tl] Negro students at schools with white children in
thiee cities, Stall perseas were an the scene in each erty the

flurry. cnrellment -proceeded quicthy, AESC werk in this
area had, perhaps, helped Co establish an atmosphere et calm
-..to implement these ideals...
Philadelphia. Pa.
November, 198?
When the ithe Rock crisis first dexeloped. the Board ot
Directors sent a telegram to President Unsenhower areme
him to appeal, through radio and television, to the conscience
of the nation asking “wholehearted accephince of interra-
Gen on the basis of fundamental human ciehts. We abo
uryed the President to warn of the danger in the growing
tesort fo violenee as a way of solving problems and to call
attention to the elective work being done to bring about
Peacetul integration in many communities.
Aosta member's week-fong trip to Linke Reck in Sep-
tember enabled us to pet a deeper insight into the caniples
problems of that troubled community. His observations
brought into sharper focus the need to continue our recon:
eting eforts, and the need to plin ahead to prevent misun-
derstinding and crises in other areas of potential tension.
In the coming Christmas seusan we will be thinking of
Peace and brotherhood and goodwill toward all men. We
here at the ARSC wall continue seeking to rmplement these
ideals at home and abroud during the next year. We hone
you will continue to share this spiritual adventure with us.
Sincerely your friend,
