ree ee — Public “A Glorious Fourth? Editor of the Daily News: What a plo:icus Fourth of July it was for Greensboro! The same week hundreds of our National Guards and reservists Jeft for Summer training for defense of our country we were besieged by a squad from the American Friends Service Committee make ing a ‘study of cmployment pat- terns’ of Greensboro that no- body except themselves asked for. Of course, you know who this crowd jis: The same Tart\gcil, excculive secretary of the procp, who tried to arrange for us {(o have the ‘wonderful opportunity” to hear Junit$ Seales, the con- victed Commpaist, on a panel discussion of peuce, and the Rev. David Andrews, who got himself and frichds well publicized Jast year when he refused to pay his federal income taxes because a pood part of it went to support the Army and Navy. Yes, it’s the same crowd whose activity once caused some Greensboro peuple to stop sup- porting some agencies of the Community Chest. Well, they are still crusading right here in our midst. Ecl! wrote a Ietler to about 690 employers in our city, including the undersigned, telling us that their project was directed by a lucal steering com- mittee of 18 peopic, getting in- formation to be wsed by the Greensboro Schoal Syste, and that we were ‘Yertunate” to have eight voluntcers from colleges and graduate schools as a survey team fo call on us, Two of these fellows came {o see me. Their visit indicated that there was no possible way they could be ef any service to me. My two visitors were from Mas- sachuseits and Arizona. Neither of them had any racial pride whatever, so they said, and would pladiy marry into any race. Both said they were conscientious ob- jectors and would refuse to bear arms to protect from Russian (Communism the American free- Woms which they enjoy. | T asked them why. Their an- ‘swert “America is just as mitch an enemy of kussian Connic- nism as the Cominunists are of us!" Treplicd with all the “fop scipeant Jantuage’ J could al- low myself fo use. I javited them and their fricnds—so ardent in the search for pesccoto po to Russia aud deed off war from there, bet they said that the real danrer was lere in America. They insisted the list was not for publication; whercupon, ] asked why they ob- jected to its publication. Their answer of all Chings, was “be. cause it would ruin them.” Then,’ why should they expect Greens- boro citizens to support them, and how deccitful they are tn be engaged in activity which would bring public condemnation on their sporsors if the public knew them. They asked me {o return the Jist containing the 18 names of Greensboro sponsors. 1 refused. They asked srain and azain and 1 told them, “A thousand times no.” They ssid my refusal to give up the list was unfair, I told them they had not been in- vited in; they had given me the names when J ashed for the list 89 freely mentioned in Tartt Bell's fetter of introduction. They also had said thet schoo! offi- cials of our city were supporting them, but could not give me theic names. They said a hr. Max irich could do so and promised to havc him call me with the names. (Later, schoo! officials denicd any connection! whatever with them or their ace. tivity). ' Max Heirich came to see mex but would not rive me the names I had asked for of school people connected with his work. Said he would not do su unless J re- turned the list of 18 Greensboro people on his steering commit. tee. Upon my insisting that he reveal the nairs of the school people, he said le would not do so until they chucked on my integrity, becsuse of my refeval to return the steering commiltce list. I told lim ‘pood day” a half dozen times; then he aid he was advised that my action in keeping the list ef 18 names in my possession was Hlegal, I told him that the sheriff and chief of police both knew where fo find me, and he Icfr. Now, isn’t that an insulting way fo spend Independence Day week in this grand and plerious Tar Heel snot of America? What con- tempt for these who fought and died here at the baide of Guil- ford Courthouse, Whet to do about it?
