Details: During the course of captioned investigation, Bruce Edwards Ivins of the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) was evaluated due to his anthrax expertise. Ivins read the book, Microbe Hunters, by Paul de Kruif, and has stated that this book ultimately led to his decision to become a scientist. Microbe Hunters is a dramatization of the scientists, bacteriologists, doctors, and medical technicians who discovered various microbes and then invented the vaccines to counter them. Among others, de Kruif wrote about Robert Koch, who made important strides in understanding anthrax. Koch showed that anthrax is composed of bacilli bacteria that turn into spores under certain conditions. Koch also advised that animals who die of anthrax should either be burned or buried deep in the ground to prevent sporulation. o¢ 7
