investigation by the FBI during 1943-1944 based on allegations that he had
expressed sentiments inimical to the war efforts of the United States. This.
was at a time when Mr. Onassis had come to the United States from_Argen- __
fina in eonnection with an attempt to sell two ef] tankers to the War Shipping
- Administration. Our investigation at that time failed to disclose that
_ Mr. Onassis was-engaged in any activity inimical to the United States. How-
ever, in 1945 allegations were received that Mr. Onassis might have been
' @ngaged in trade with German and Ralian firms under fictitious names.
; Allegations were also made after the war that Mr. Onassis had been aidan
- $n smuggling tobacco into Argentina to avoid the high import duty.
