On June 13, 1981, a conference concerning the
fibrous evidence obtained from numerous victims in the series
of killings of black children and young black men in the

of the textile fiber industry and various forensic laboratories
throughout the United States and Canada to examine the hair
and fiber evidence in these cases and attempt to answer
a number of questions of special interest to the Atlanta
Task Force concerning the validity and significance of the
findings of the Georgia State Crime Laboratory.
Arrangements for this conference were made prior
to the development of Wayne Bertram Williams as a suspect
in this case and the search of Williams’ home and automobile.
As a result of the searches, numerous items of evidence
composed of textile fibers were obtained for comparison
purposes,
An interview on June 9, 1981,
by Special Agent (SA) reflects the findings
of the Georgia State Crime Laboratory concerning the fibrous
material from victims in this case and the results of compar ing
these fibers with items from the home of Wayne Bertram Williams.
An FD -302 was prepared with the results of this interview.
Because of the finding of fibers in the composition of items
from the home and automobile of Williams' like those removed
from numerous victims, the fiber specialists were asked
to not only verify the fiber matches but were also asked
to consider the significance of these matches and what additional
tests would be of value to characterize and compare these
fibers.
A total of fourteen fiber specialists in addition
to two representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI) Laboratory were given the opportunity to examine and
compare microscopically the hair and fiber evidence obtained
and examined by the Georgia State Crime Laboratory.
After the fiber specialists had completed their
examinations, they were each asked to give their opinion
of the vailidity and significance of the fibrous evidence
in this case linking the victims to the items from the home
and vehicle of Wayne Bertram Williams, to members of the
Atlanta Task Force and other city and county officials.
