It was determined that RUTHLBERLAU returned from California .” about the middle of 10/7 and is again occupring her apartment at 1 - Ee 57 Ste, NYC. Also since about the same period of time BSECHT has * _ been residing with BERLAU at this address and spencs most of his time’ | ‘in the apartment. ste > According to local newspapers, BRECHT'S play,“"Galileoc,” sterrir CHARLESILAUGHTON, will be presented for one week starting 12/7/47 under the sponsorship of the-2xperimental Theater, adjunct of the-American National Theater and Academy. ——- Enclosed is a newspaper clipping from the New York Times dated - 16/51/47 concerning BRECHT'S testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. It is noted BRECHT testitied he is not a Communist, but admitted he had written revolutionary literature in Germany because of anti-Hitler feelings. He also testified he has collaborated with HANS*EISLER whom he has known since the niddle '20'e and acquaintanceship with GERHARTYEISLER and other Conmmumistse. *urther, _ according to the Journal-American N. r, he stated GRECORLTEREI FETS visited him in 1943. On 10/28/47 advised ARTEA DCDDrSTZRN, ._ subject in the MOCASE, contacted RUTH BERLAU at which time BERLAU ad-— vised she was leaving soon for Denmark for a5 or 4 months!’ satay. MRS. STERN inquired about BRECHT and BERLAU stated he was in ‘iashington, OC, but would return to New York City 10/30/47. They discussed the hearing: before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and MASTRA inoufrec how BRECHT felt about it. BERLAU stated it was more difficult for BRECHT (than other witnesses) and that hia primary consideration was that he was not en American. MRS.
