Probe of Mystery
Victim Namedas Elizabeth Short;
Clews Hunted at Santa Barbara
Through fingerprints rushed to the FBI in
Washington by the. Los Angeles Examiner, the‘
|. girl victim of a mutilation murder’whose body was
| found here Wednesday was identified yesterday. -
| Ghe is Elizabeth Short, 22 years old, at one
| time employed as a civilian clerk at Camp Cooke,
| 20 miles north of Lompoc. -
: FBI records listed the home address as Santa
Barbara and that she was born July 29, 1924, if
Hyde Park, Mass.
The records also showed she had been ar-|
rested as a juvenile delinquent at Santa Barbara’
September 23, 1943, and released.
|‘ Her deseription in the FBI file tallied with
that of the slain girl and her fingerprints clinched
the identification.
\Soundphotos Aid Identification
No trace of the girl after she left Camp Cooke
was found in the records.
The identification was brought about by the
cooperative effort of the Examiner, International
News Sound photos and the FBI
The Examiner obtained fingerprints of the
slain girl and sent them by soundphoto to this
newspaper’s bureau in Washington, D. C. Ray -
Richards, manager of thé bureau and a former
Examiner reporter, took the prints to the FBI
| offices. .

fingerprint records and established that the prints,
| wore those of the Short girl. —
