Throughout the test, Manley’s
attractive blonde wife, Harriet,
22, sat in police headquarters
with his father, William Morris
Manley. Both insisted he was in-
nocent, a good husband and in-
capable of such a crime.

Police arrested Manley last
night at the home of a friend
here, He had just returned from
a business trip to San Francisco.
A widespread search had started
for him after witnesses told of
Miss Short’s acquaintance with a
red-haired man. Officers woulda ~
not disclose how they located
Manley. ,
The suspect, who lives with his
family at suburban South Gate,
said he met Miss Short Dec. 15, a
month. before her mutilated body
was found. She was standing
outside a bus station at San Diego
when Manley, there on a business
trip, drove by.
“She was such a pretty girl
that E stopped and raked up a
conversation with her,” he said.
He said he had a date with her
that night and “kissed her a few
times—but that’s all.” :
He said he “just ran into her”
again in January when she had
“bad scratches on both her arms
above the elbows on the outside.”
He said she blamed a “jealous”
boy friend for the scratches. He
drove her here from San Diego
Jan. 9 after they spent the night
together at a hotel—the last he
saw of her, he said. He w
