¥ Even so, let's put it this way, the Vietnamese people,
if even if there was no anti-wax movement in the United States or
= anywhere else in the world, are convinced, and I'm convinced
Sy also, that they would win final victory, that they would, that
Pa Vietnam will in fact win. Thry s3re*prepared to continue fighting
3 the war five years, ten years, twenty years, thirty years, until
- that they've won the complete withdrawa] of all U. S. troops from
4 Vietnam. At the =ameo time they're willing to do everything short
a of compromising these basic principles to ease the U. S&S. out of
Vietnam. In fact, they put it as if the U. S, troops want red
carpets and flcwers strew> before them as they go to the boats,
that they'll be glad to o1:: nize that for them. But they will
not budge on the principle «f total and imnediate withdrawal.

At this pint, tie-y say that the U. S. anti-war
movement can pluy an amor’ decisive role not in the sense of
whether or net ily will win victory but in the sense of whether
the war will end in a year or at an easily time, or whether cie
me war will take Ienyger to win. New, and that's what it about boils
down to, and that'= I think ef this point our responsibility not
only to the Victnamese people but to the American people as well.
That's sort of the general cutline of what the Vietnamese
presented. In each of these areas they went into a lot more detail
but one thing that they did talk about which is very difficult to
convey unless you've actually met with them and talked with them, and
studied the situation in Vietnam quite thoroughly, is cw a nation
of 14 million peovle, how this small underdeveloped nation has
been able to take on what is suppcesedly the most. powerful military
machine in the world and net erly bring i= to a grinding halt,
but ‘to actually defeat it on the battlefield. The kind cf answer
that they gave is prople's war.
But again, I mean, to a lot of pecple th=t seems just
like a slogan. And a lot of, and when the military guy was speaking
to us, he had a few thoughts in his speech, that the greatest
invention of the twentieth century is net nuclear weapons but
people's war. The U. S. will never escape from the labyrinth and
see of fighting of people's war.
