pending appeal of the charges against him. RANDOLPH
‘JENNINGS is the third member who remains in North Carolina
State Prison.

On June 19, 1972, hr,

Carolina, advised JOSEPH IRWIN WADDELL, Negro male, born
May 27, 1950, Forsyth County, North Carolina, FBI Number
425-683 H, died June 13, 1972 in Central Prison. Dr.
R. PAGE HUDSON, Chief Medical Examiner for the State of
North Carolina, advised that WADDELL apparently died of
severe heart disease, WADDELL's body was moved from
Central Prison to W-ke Memorial Hospital in Raleigh, North
Carolina, where an autopsy was performed. Dr. JAMES R,.
EDWARDS, M. D., Pathologist, performed an autopsy on
June 14, 1972, and established cause of death in preliminary
findings as severe heart disease.
WADDELL was a member of tne North Carolina
Chapter of the Black Panther Party for a short time prior
to his arrest for armed robbery in High Point, North
Carolina. On January 20, 1971, WADDELL was convicted of
armed robbery and sentenced to 15-20 years imprisonment.
WADDELL was confined to Central Prison, Raleigh, North
Corolina, following his conviction. 7

LARRY LITTLE, head of the Winston-Salem Chapter
of the Black Panther Party, attempted to make WADDELL's
death an issue in the black commimity. BPP members claimed
WADDELL was in excellent health and that the prison's
claim that WADDELL died of a heart attack was very questionable.
LARRY LITTLE contacted American Civil liberties Union
attorneys JOSEPH H./TIEGER of Fayetteville, North Carolina,
and JERRY /PAUL of Durham, North Carelina, to inquire into

this incident with prison authorities. Both TIEGER and
PAUL have represented BPP members in the past. LITTLE talked
about heading a delegation of BPP members and proceeding
to Raleigh, North Carolina, to demand a hearing with the
warden of Central Prison regarding the circumstances of
WADDELL's death.
