On July 24, 1970, BARBER appeared in United States District Court, High Point, North Carolina, on these assault charges; however, his case was continued until August 17, 1970. At the time the continuance was granted Judge KENNETH CARRINGTON explained to BARBER that he would be held personally accountable for any violence which might directly or indirectly occur in the community in the meantime.
