ea See a ne Pee Le, LEO ll oh es RY TN ae By Way of Introduction “] wouLp LIKE ta make a twofold dedication of this work: first to the memories of Edson Souto. Marco Antonio Bras de Carvalho, Nelson José de Almeida (“EScoteiro). and so many other heroic fighters and urban guerrillas who fell at the hands of assassins of the Mihtary Police, the Army, the Navy. the Air Force. and the DOPS.' hated in- Struments of the repressive military dictatorship. Second, to the brave comrades — men and women- imprisoned in the medieval dungeons of the Brazilian Government and. subjected to tortures that even surpass the horrendous crimes practiced by the azis. Like those comrades whose memory we revere, as well as those taken prisoner in battle, what we must do is fight. Each comrade who opposes the military dictatorship and wants to fight it can do something, however insignificant the task may scem. f urge all who read this minimenual and reach the conclusion that they cannot remain inactive, to follow its instructions and join the fight now. I do so because, under whatever hypothesis and in what- ever circumstances. the duty of every revolutionary is to make the revolution. Another important problem is not merely to read the minimanual here and now, but to circulate tts contents. This circulation will be possible if those who agree with sts ideas make mimeographed copies or print it in a pamphiet. though im this lattcr case, armed struggle itself will be necescary. , Finally, the reason that the present minimanual bears my signature. is that the idcas expressed or systeratized here reflect the personal expe- rience of a group of men engaged jn armed struggle in Brazil, among whom I have the honor ta be inciuded. So that certain individuals will haye no doubt about what this minimanual proclaims and can no longer deny the facts or continue to state that the conditions for the struggle do not exist, if is necessary to assume responsibility for what is said and done. Hence anonymity becomes a problem in a work such as this. The important fact is that there are patriots prepared to fight like Ordinary soldiers. ana ihe more there are the better. The accusafion of assault or terrerism no longer has the pejorative meaning it us¢d to have. It has acquired new clothing. a new colora- tion. It doesfmot factionalize. it does not discredit; on the contrary it represents f focal point of attraction. Today to be an assailant or a terrorist is a quahiv that ennobies ’ any honorable man because it is an act warthy of « revolutionary engaged in armed struggle against the shamediul miliary dictatorship and its monstrosities, A Definition of the Urban Guerrilia The chronic structural crisis charactcnsuc of Brazil today, and its resultant political instability, are what_have brought about the upsurge of revolutionary war in the country. The revolutionary war manifests itself in the form of urban guerilla warfare. psychological warfare. 1 Department of Public and Social Order. (Editor's note) .
