Another added that Mrs.
Maclean had spent every night
at the villa since she and her
family arrived there. Continuous
guard had been kept by the
police.
Late last night the Surete
Nationale said that though Mac-
lean and Burgess had not been
seen on French territory, “it is
likely that Scotland Yard knows
where they are. In anv case, we
are carrying on our look-out.”
In a telephone interview, the
Mavor of La Garde Freinet—the
village nearest to where the
Maclean family are staying—told
me: “It is quite impossible for
Mrs. Maclean to have met her
husband here We have 4

Earlier, the Forergn Office, in
the first of ‘three statements
through the day, said that reports
of the diplomats having been
found were unconfirmed,

yesterday a black Hil'man car
had been seen leaving the villa.
It bore a regisiration plate of a
type rescrved for foreign tourists
in France. Inside the ear were a
man and a woman. it left at such
a@ speed that the passengers couirl
not be identified.
Afterwards, it was found that
two rooms had been booked at
an hote] about six miles away.
They were taken for “ friends of
M. Gosselin.” owner of the villa
La Sauvageonne. ~
A Foreign Office spokesman, in
Statement No. 3, now said that
suggestions that an official state-
ment about Burgess and
Maclean was io be issued within
the next fortnight were also
without foundation.
Embassies asked
“We do not know Where ther
are,” he stated. “All the
authorities who might be able to
assist have been asked to help
in the search."
British Embassies and Con-
sulates everywhere had been
asked to supply any information
which might reach them. This
would apply ta the Middle
Eastern and South American
States and Iron Curtain coun-
tries’ were also aware of the
search.
This is how the mystery of the
diplomats has built up so far:
They vanished on May 25 after
landing frum a week-end

mother received a telegram from
