DISAPPEARED IN MAY. ~ Maclean and Burgess, close friends, disappeared after setting out on a purported vacation to the continent on May 26. Maclean, 38, was chief of the Foreign Office American section, at the time he left his wife was expecting a child. . He was conSidered a brilliant career official although he had suffered a nervous breakdown last year. Burgess, 40, had been attached to the British Embassy in Washington and along with Maclean was well-posted on inter-Allied secrets which presumably included atomic information. While in the Capital here Burgess was known for his heavy drinking and became involved with Virgfnia polItce over ~~’ traffic violations.
