services rendered by the CYO staff, every phase of activity hes been

constructive way.
ATHLETICS
Since 1946, when 5.122 boys end girls made up our basketball leagues,
this pacticuler sport has attracted greater numbers each year. The 1947-48
season supplied activity for 7,181 participants, and in 1948-49, we find
that 7,700 CYO-ars on 608 teams comprise the largest organized basketball
league in the country.
Baseball diamonds in Staten Island, in Manhattan, and the Bronx, and in
the Westchester and Upstate areas, provided a proving ground for 212
teams and 4,100 piayers,
Our older groups have evidenced @ tremendous interest in bowling and
1,060 participated in Westchester, Staten Island, and the Bronz, for a most
successful season.
Devotees of the cinder paths were attracted to the number of approxi-
mately 4,000 in a series of five major meets during 1947-48.
Golf tournaments were arranged in Steten Island and Westchester and
the winner of the Junior Staten Island tournament represented this organi-
zation in the Annual National Caddies Tournament et Ohio State University
campus, Columbus, Ohio.
Association Football and Roller Hockey proved to be of great interest
fo the hundreds of city boys who competed in these leagues,
Swimming meets efforded an excellent indoor activity for many youngsters
in all areas.
