Broome County, for speeding. At approximately 10:00 p. m.,
on that evening, a state trooper stopped a speeding car

license as Joseph Di Palermo, 246 Elizabeth Street,
New York City. The driver of the vehicle, upon being unable
to give the correct birth date on the driver's license
was placed in the state trooper's car and brought to the
Binghamton Substation, where he was identified as Carmine
Galante, 274 Marcy Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. He had
over $1,800 in cash on his person, $1,200 of which was
in $100 bills. The other two occupants of this vehicle
were later determined to be Frank Garofalo and John Bonventre.
Galante was charged with speeding, being an
unlicensed operator, and the unauthorized use of another's
driver's license and was arraigned before the Justice of the
Peace in the town of Windsor where he pled not guilty and
was released on $600 bail with the case set for October 25,
1956. Shortly after this arrest, efforts were made by
Chief of Detectives Chris Gleitsmann and Sergeant Peter
Policastro of the West New York, New Jersey Police Department
to obtain leniency for Galante. It was alleged that an
offer of $1,000 was made if the State Police would intercede
and allow Galante to be given a suspended sentence.
