Carmine Galante was released from Federal Prison,
Atlanta, Georgia, on January 24, 1974. Information

following is background information regarding Galante:

a New York patrolman, who was trying to protect a payroll
from robbery, in Brooklyn, however, he was released for t.

For this offense he received a twelve years and six
months sentence, however, he was paroled on May 1, 1939.
While on parole to the New York State Parole authorities,
considerable suspicion was aroused concerning the legitimacy
of his activities, and efforts were madetto determine if he
was violating the provisions of his parole. On the evening

of January ll, 1943, Galante reported to his parole office
and upon eaving, was put under surveillance. He was observed a

by the parole officers. Since they had no vehicle available
and no other transportation was immediately available, they
were unable to continue their surveillance. Shortly thereafter,
at approximately 9:40 p. m. that same evening, Carlo Tresca,
editor of an Italian la e newspaper, was murdered on
Fifth Avenue, by an unidentified assailant who entered a
Ford sedan in which two accomplices were believed to be waiting.
