On August 25, 1971, it was reported that a fund
raising benefit at the Academy Theater, 372] University
Avenue, San Diego, California, was scheduled for September 5,
1971, for Cesar Chavez, and the Labor Union sponsored by the
Non-Violent Action Committee (NVA).
(ED August 25, 1971, and
gp, 30, 1971)
The NVA was organized early in
197] for the purpose of preventing the
departure of the USS Constellation,
which was to sail from San Diego to
Vietnam on October 1, 1971.
Cesar Chavez visited with Julio Prado Valdez in
Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, on October 3, 1971, at
which time financial problems that Prado was having and the
fact that he needed more money for the health clinic in
Mexicali, were discussed. The UFWOC was paying 5,000 to
6,000 pesos (approximately $500.00) a month to Prado and was
to sent $200.00 to $300.00 more per month for the rent of
the health clinic in Mexicali.
