— AMENDING MIGRATORY LABOR LAWS 365 Congressman Hacen. That would include Agiular and Susoeff, is that right ? Mr. Curavez. Particularly Agiular. . Congressman Hacex. Now, have here a copy of the Valley Labor Citizen, which was published in Fresno, and has these same two stubs, Now, this story—and I think it was repeated in your publication El ‘Malcriado—refers to one of these deductions as insurance, I believe. Now, ] understand that this Agiular, for example, his deduction of $40.64 js for board, $2.50 a day. dn other wo you say be only netted #63, but he was receiving board. I don’t know the quality of it. So this particular stub has been misrepresented. Naw. if you'll average out Agiular's pay, he made $1.76 an hour, and J don%#think you're intending to prove that. Now, if you'll average out ocff’s pay, and I assume the deduction from him is also for boargt he made $1.97 an hour. N@p, in this same issue of the Valley Labor Citizen, there’s a story about a machinist getting a new contract in the Fresno area, and the beginning wags rate is $1.90 an hour. And Mr. Susceff made more than tho machinists got beginning under their new contract. And ’m curious about these stubs because they've been grossly misrepresented, and I don’t think you intentionally would do that. Mir. Czavez. I'did not submit the stubs to show that they were not getting a lot of money. I presented the stubs to show the extent of the attempts to break up the strike in Delans. As you recall, before the strike the workers were getting only an average of $1.15 per hour, and this shows way up, Way more than the io workers have been getting, were getting before the strike. Se it a proves very conclusively that the growers can afferd to pay a lot more tee oll et money than they claim they can when the strike situation presents EE TD itself. rs - Congressman Hace. Well, you've used thece stubs in a context nn other than your testimony here today to show how low a net a worser gets. Now, actually these stubs demonstrate that one man averaged $1.76 an hour and the other averaged $1.97 an hour. Now, you don't want te engage in that kind of misrepresent ation, [’m sure. Mr. Cuavez. I'm sure that I’m not trying to misrepresent the pay slips. What I'm irying 10 show is the wage difference because ofa strike in Delano, and also the importation of strikebreakers in this case, and what Schenley Industries have been doing in ordey.to break the strike, Congressman Hacex. I don’t want to argue with you, but you men- as tioned the fact that this guy only made $5 in 2 days’ work, or some- thing, or something low. Well, in fact, he made a lot more than that. ay ee He averaged $1.97 an hour. And so you're misrepresenting the stub. fetes (ER oe That's my whole point, and I think we should be factual and truth- ore ne ful in dealing with these things. : o tle “ “Senstor Wiis. What are the deductions for that are shown? a a These forms are loaded with initials. et ety eee Congressman Hacer. There's a code down hers. But it shows this are $40.64 item if you read that, as insurance of some kind, but actually . i ~ it's at $2.50aday. But this stub has been publicized all over the State Re of California as representing the Jow net that a farmworker gets. : ~~ er Een Sar ms + a = %, = = t FS af ee 7: . a sieare enter , ee are Ade ak ‘aici, mn, ¥ : : = < ii a ee Se es . aa ae ~ som , - Rowe... ae - a - . toe oe ee i — ‘a Pod “ “ * ine ty 5 ig wee aig a a SEE a ae rad ae Ot el Ww = . - i Loma igang yA eat tae ee ners See eae oe Ieee wa aa Meee ST ne Oe “ts.
