NY a rn Ce A . ih duly '27 £24973 GENERAL INVESTIGATIVE DIVISION The Civil Rights Division of the Department ‘has requested interviews of 6 complainants ‘who are members of the United Farm Workers ‘Union (UFWU) in Kern County, California. .It is alleged they have been harassed and _intimidated in connection with various + | i boycotts and that local officers have not pro- “vided equal protection. This could involve violation of the Civil Rights Statutes. The attached furnishes details of efforts ,; to locate and interview the alleged victims and apparent lack of cooperation by the legal office of the UFWU to make them ‘readily available. On 7/26/73, over 100 UFWU pickets appeared at the Bakersfield, California, Resident Agency, to make civil rights complaints in connection with this matter. Only one of the original 6 alleged victims was in the group. The pickets were accompanied by a member of the UFWU legal office and 2 employees of the Justice Department's Community Relations Service. Pickets were orderly and no known press coverage; interviews continuing. Matter being discussed with the Department and instructions will be issued to Sacramento.
