hundred twenty hefty, bearded men from
L.A. are paid $67.50 per day to pro-
tect the interests of ti--. Teamsters and
the sYpwers. Ina ared. ‘sonference on
June 19 Grami insisted all the"quards"
were Teemsters on leave from their
usual jobs to assist him with the
problems.in Coachella. Wherever they
come from it is clear that they are
the biggest joke that has hit Coachel-
la for 2 iong time. They would be
funny except for the tragic results
that keep happening from their con-
tinued presence. Some cf their more
brilliant statements include: "If
you don't like it, ya want to make some-
thin' of it?" As we returned to Michi-
yan we could only feel sorry for the
poor people in this small desert town.
They must live in this atmosphere of
fear and intimidation for the next
month until the harvest is over.
Conclusion
&s we left the Coachelia Valley we
could not help but recall the words of
an article about Einar Mohn, director of
the Western Conference of Teamsters.
Jane Kiely, of Graduate Theologoiceal Un-
ion (Berkeley) interviewed him for her
dissertation on farm labor. Mohn said
ferm workers will not he able to take
part in meetings for ahout two years (L.A.
Times, April 28). In two years he expects
more whites in the fields and this, he
says, will make organizing farmworkers
more feasible. Because of the present
membership of the union he said it is dif~
ficult to have an effective union.
In conclusion, we can only say that the
Teamsters have no business calling them-
selves a union of farmworkers. They could
not possibly come to understand the needs
of farmworkers, nor dp they plan on repre-
senting them fairly when it comes to a4
showdown with the growers. Grapes produced
under their contracts should make the ord-
inary person of conscience sick, when he
knows the full extent of the oppresion un-
der which these grapes are harvested.
Because of this, we urge the members of
CCMA to: 1) work with existing groups in
