We turned off Highway 1776 onto a fairly wide, ravel topped dirt road about 7 a.m. 3a proceeded down the road about amile, stopsed, and for about three or four minutes half of the group stood on the sice of the road and tried to persuade several truckloads of farm worker leavirg for the fields not to go te work. . 3. Se proceeded down ihe road again for about half a mile and sicpped where the sane workers were getiting off the trucks and bepinning to pick melons. 4. | did not see a singic sign anywhere on this dirt road indicating that it was private property or that we were trespassing. | assumed it was a publs rose jor that very reason; and because the road appeared to be well mainta ned and wall travelled. 5. Qur cars ware parked off the road on the strip of land approximately eight faet wide between the road and the irrigation canal that bordered the melon fields. We stood on that same strip of land with our United Farm worker flags and talked to the farm workers starting to work in the fields. «a ware there about three or four minutes. & | was standing at the far right end of the proup, | heard cars driva up and sone kind of commotion. | lookad to my left and saw two cars drive up at high speed and stop near me. | also noticcd other cars criving up te the Jefi of our group, but I'm not sure how many. | saw at least five Ceputies thore over the course of the next few minutes, 7. | saw one doputy crab the bluc knagsack belonzing to a soubor of tha pros.. | hoard Jim Douglas, an attorney, and a deputy arguing avout whether we were trespassing or mot. 7 then heard Jim Douslas say "Allright. Lets a} pound pet in their cars."
