The June 3, 1967, edition of the Express and News, ‘
a daily newspaper published in San Antonio, exag,carried an **
article on page one, which quotes one Dr. Xamird/Casso, foo?
iHcAllen, Texas, as saying that Nagdalen imas, who was ”
arrested on the night of June 1, 1967, Sy Texas Rangers
"“Toox the worst beating I have ever seen law enforcement
officers administer" and that Dimas suffered a brain con-
cussion, a gash behind the ear, and “tremendous swelling
near the brain",

The same article states Texas Ranger Captain
A. L, Allee in an interview with a Harlingen, Texas, radio
Station, June 2, 1967, had said he, accompanied two Starr
County Deputy Sheriffs, arrested Dimas and SenjModriguez
because he feared violence if they were left-4t large.
Allee said Dimas and Rodriguez were traced to a
. house where they were found seated at a table with their
hands underneath it. He ordered them to put their hands up;
they refused to do so; and he and the deputies "ysed what
force was necessary" to arrest them.

The same newspaper carries an article on page one
which quoted Colonel Homer Garrison, Director, Texas Depart-~
ment of Public Safety, as saying charges of Rangers' brutality
are “totally false and unfounded". He noted "The charge of :
police brutality is the comnon defense and cry of a professional r
criminal and agitator" and referring to statements by critics
of the Texas Rangers said “If they obey the law, no Texas Ranger
ever has or ever will molest them", ;
