_ SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 1—
Despite the disclaimers of Fed-'
era! officials, an unemployed,
. Saborer who describes himself,
at & paid police informer insists.
that certain farmers in the San)
Joaquin Valley of California,|
ordered the assassination of;
‘ Cesar Chavez, the farm union.
‘Jeader.. - 1 : ‘
‘The informer, Larry) Shears.
32 years old, said the
been offered $5,000 to partici-|
pate in the plist and thet he
d witnessed what appeared
to be the payment of $30,000
to carry out the assassination.
Mr. Shears, « thin, long-
haired man who lives in Baker-
fied, offered a series of tape
recordings and documents that
he said demonstrated the verac-
ity of hfs story. ; ;
- Cohen, chief counsel to
the Un rm Workers Or-
ganizing Committee, has ex-
pressed concen for ihe safeiv

union, and has said that hej
will] seek a Congressional in-|
vestigation. .
Warned by Agents
Mr. Cohen said that tast July
$i) Federal agents secretly
warned the union that they had
reason to believe an attempt to
assassinate Mr. Chavez was be-
ing otganized. Gn one occasion
Federal agents were said to
have provided protection for
Mr. Chavez at a rally.
But jast, according to an As-
@ociated Press dispatch, a Fed-
era] spokesman said that the
Government “now considers the
case closed” after the informer
was unable to provide any)
f of a plot.
Mr. Chavez has been a con-
troversial figure in his union’s
tong and bitter struggie to or.
