On June 20, 1973, a UFW force of 950 pickets
moved into the small community of Mecca, CaliYornia,
located south of Indio, sealing off the town by blocking
roads and harassing the grape workers in their vehicles
and homes. This activity prevented workers from going
to work for a period of time.
In connection with this incident efforts were
made to block the road and for the first time CSO =
el*were subject to attack. With UFW pickets on
oth sides of the road,"barbs" shaped out of nails were
scattered on the roacway and the tires of the Sheriff's
Office vehicles were flattened.
