P é 4 ty Frome AMERICA FIRST VOMMITTEE a * 515 Madison Avenue RELEASE TO MORNING PAPERS New York City Plaza 35425 OF THURSDAY, APRIL 24, APPEARING ON THE STREET NOT EARLIER THAN 10 P.M. (E.S+T.) {EDITORS -- The following text of the address of Col. Charles A. Lind- bergh before the America First rally at Manhattan Center, 311 West 34th Street, a_i New York City, is for release at 10 P.M., the time at which he is scheduled to start his talk. PLEASE GUARD AGAINST PREMATURE RELEASE.) N= “There are many viewpointa from which the issues of this war can be argued. Some are primarily idealistic. ‘Some are primarily practical. One should, I believe, strive for a balance of both. But, since the aubjects that can be covered in a aingle addross are limited, tonight I ehall diecuss the war from a viewpoint which is primarily practical. It ia not that I believe ideals are unimportant, even among tho realitios of wars but if a nation is to survive in « hostile world, its ideale must bo backed by tho hard logic of military prec- ticability. If tho outcomo of war deponded upon ideale alono, this would bo a different world than it ia today. I kmow I will be severely eriticizod by the intorventionistes in america when I say we should ngt enter a War unless we have o reasonable chance of wine . ning. That, they will}Glain, ia far too mterialistic a viewpoint. They will advance again the same arguments that were used to persuade France to declare war against Germany in 1939. But I do not believe that our American ideale, and our way of life, will gain through an uneuccesaful war. And I know that the We are no better propered today than France was when the interventionista in Europe persuaded her to attack the Siegfried Lins. I have eaid before, and I will say again, that I believe it will be « tragedy to the entire world if the British Empire collapses. That ie one of the main reasons why I opposed this war befor it wae declared, and why I have constantly advocated a negotiated peace. J did not fee] that England and France : es he ~ ee ee er es = . . 2 a s =. t25 had 4 b hance of Winning. France has now boon defeatod; and, despite reasonadia the propaganda and confusion of recent months, it is ~.w obvious that England is losing the wit I coliore thie is realizod evon by the British govornment. But they have one last desperate plan remaining. They hope that they y be gble, to persuade us to send another American Expeditionary Force te Europe / and to share with England militarily, as well ae financially. the finance ef this war. ant a!
