A couple of days after this visit, the Senctor wailea to Viereck-~for ectin, and
‘revision——the manascript of a speech entitled ‘German Contributions to Anerican
Lire.’ Lundeen was to deliver tnis speech over the Labor Lay holidays. une
revised speech came oacx to Lunaeen on tne aiternoon of Au;ust 31, the aay on
which the Senator Was Xiiled in an airplane crash at Lovettsvilie, Vir inia. ,
Senator Lundeen took the manuscript with him on his fatal airplane trip.
NViereck was a practical man. The contents of the speech he had ;repsred
for Lundeen were not wasted. Shortly after the Senator's desta, a speech with
similar title and contents was delivered oy Theodore Ww effnan, head of the
Steuben Society. Tne Hoffman speecn was inserted in the Congressional hecord,
reprinted anc mailed around the country postage free under tne franking privilege
of Senator Gerala P. Nye of North Dakota."
