clothes and the subject told him he had stolen them from
one of the civilian employee's lockers at the United States
Coast Guard, Terminal Island, California.
MOSELEY advised that in the trouser pocket of the
clothes taken from the civilian employee of the Coast Guard,
there was a set of car keys which apparently MANSON did
not know were in this pocket, inasmuch as the car to which
these keys belonged was approximately 20 feet from the car
in which the subject was apprehended.
MOSELEY advised that MANSON told him he attempted
to escape and gave several reasons for this attempt, namely
that he was nervous and upset because offamily conditions.
MOSELEY stated that MANSON said that he was planning to
escape and was putting his plans into effect when he was
caught. MOSELEY advised that MANSON did not actually escape,
although he did cut through the fence of the outer area of
the United States Coast Guard perimeter. MOSBLEY stated
that he would call it an attempted escape, rather than an
escape.
MOSELEY advised that he then returned to the
United States Coast Guard parking lot and checked the 1949
Chevrolet in question and at that time found one pair of
pliers and a pair of cutters on the floorboard,
He advised that he had Officer EASTMAN remain
with the vehicle while he went back to the institution and
telephoned the FBI at approximately 2:20 PM, advising them
of the unsuccessful attempted escape of the subject.
Asso¢iate Warden MOSELEY advised that CHARLES
MILLES MANSON, Federal Correctional Institution No. 3845,
FBI No, 643369A, was received at the institution on May 2,
1956, based on a three-year sentence beginning April 23,
1956, for interstate transportation of a stolen motor vehicle.
On April 12, 1957, Associate Warden MOSELEY
furnished the following transcript of the recording made
by him on April 10, 1957, of his interview with CHARLE
MILLES MANSON:
MANSON: "I took a camera and I sold it for Three
Dollars--Two Dollars and some change--
and I got this old fellow's clothes out
of his locker and I ....”
