Donald (Shorty) Shea, whose
prod was never found after
his August, 1969, disappear-
; ance,
Grogan, wearing faded jail
denims, sat unemotionally
with his legs crossed at the
counsel fable afternoon as
jury fo reman William S.
Brinkley read the verdict,
ending eight hours of deliber-
ations that began Friday.
A slight smile crossed Gro-
gan’s lips as the court clerk
polled individually the eight
men and four women on the
jury panel.
Trial Judge James G. Kotz
ordered the jury to return
Tuesday at 10 a.m. for the
penalty phase of the trial.
Prosecutor Burton Katz said
he “absolutely” intends to
press vigorously for the death
penalty.
After the jury was excused,
defense counsel Charles
Weedman walked briskly out
of the courtroom, refusing to
comment. —

Witnesses at Grogan’s trial
told the jurors that. Shea’s dis-
appearance, leaving all his
belongings behind, came dur-
ing the same month as_the
‘Pate-LaBianca murder spree.

Grogan took the stand to
deny the charge.

He also is charged in that
case with the murder of Mali-
bu musician Gary Hinman.
The jury has deliberated more
than a week without reaching
