Since the date of the above letter there have sppeared in the ~~ ~ Daily Worker and the Worker on January 23, 25 and 26, 1948 distorted stories of the arrest of the subject. The purpose of this letter is to correctly info the Bureau of the events of the arrest. In the Daily Worker of January 23, 1948 on Page 1, Coluan 3, 4 and 5, ELIZABETH GURLEF-FLYNN, National Committee Member of the Commmist Party, sta the following concerning the arrest: . . "CLAUDIA JONES, member of the National Committee of the Commmist Party and Executive Secretary of our National Women's Commission, was arrested at her home late Monday night, a favored Gestapo trick. Comrade CLAUDIA, who is my closest co-worker, was 111 over the last weekend. She called Councilman DAVIS, who attempted to persuade the ; arresting officers to walt there until he could come which they refusedii ti] In all decency they could have released her in hia custody, as a responsible public official and an attorney with the right to practice in federal courts, until bail could be posted the next day. Instead they rushed her off to jail, demamied $1,600 bail and in brutal haste took her to Ellis Island where she remained until late Tussday.” As pointed out in the referenced letter, CLAUDIA JONES was arrested at 8:40 PM at her home upon her pene pe? Tetum _from_mork. Tt was not deemed advisable to apprehend her during day at her place of ‘employment, the Communist Party Headquarters. She was given permission to make the requested telephone calls and was advised that she would be givan time to prepare to be . taken to Ellis Island. The request made by Councilman DAYYS to detain her ie her oe ee ~~ oe ee oe te vm his arrival was denied by the Immigration lnspecter.
