Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Young explained that he felt Abernathy should. attend | but was not anxious to have Coretta King in on the negotiations with the international presidents. He said that he had suggested Wednesday, June s a better day for the meeting. Young also mentioned that! baid that with respect to the SCLC going into @ membership campaign that: they want to try to guarantee that a good percentrage of their membership would become SCLC members and that they are willing to pusha-s membership drive but want Abernathy to be present. be | b7c - Levison said he saw no objectio not going’ along with the me vey or going along with [Sete membership. proposal, , ; Young brought up the matter of Bayard Rustin's statement - and said that Rustin wanted him to approve it. Young stated that he would not approve it wouthout a group analyzing it. _ He said he did not know why Rustin issued it. _S K, Levison attacked Rustin's statement stating he has never. seen anything as insulting. He said that the PPC effort. in: Washington is being sabotaged by the SCLC people in Washington, including Young, by actions such as bringing Rustin in to run | the June 19 march. He told Young the SCLC was playing house with Resurrection City,that it had been seid at the outset: that not much of a city would be neeced. because once the action began and people went to jail they would be fed there.
