Pap ., : ' 3770 LONDAY, SOVEID.R 1, 1943. - ene DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE ' ‘The Department of Justice announced today that a total of 923 alien enemies have been apprehended by the FBI as the result of investiga- tions originating from a check on purchasers of "Rueckwanderer Marks" — German | "re=micration" Marks. | According to FBI Director J, Edgar Hoover, the sale of Rueck= " wanderer Marks — foreifn exchange which could be spent only in Gerrany =~ began in the United States in May, 1936, and ceased in June, i941, with the freezing of such foreign remittances by Presidential Proclamation, Information obtained by the FBI, fir. Hoover said, indicates that the entire progran was controlled by the German Ministry of Economics in an effort to obtain badly=needed foreign ‘exchange. Te. Hoover asserted that some of the nost dangerous German aliens dn the United ‘States first came to the attention of the FBI because their names anpeared on lists of purchasers of Rueckwanderer Marks.
